Arson

The fire at the sanatorium was quickly extinguished by the Pine City Fire Department.

The Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports that arson was the cause of the Jan. 28 fire at the former Pokegama Sanatorium.

According to law enforcement, at approximately 5:35 a.m. this past Tuesday, Jan. 28 the Pine City Fire Department along with the Pine County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a structure fire at 10035 Pokegama Lake Road near Pine City. A passerby had found that the former Pokegama Sanatorium was on fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished by the Pine City Fire Department, and the cause of the fire was determined to be arson. The case remains under investigation by the Pine City Fire Department, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The public is encouraged to report any information relating to this case to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office at 320-629-8380. Information can also be reported to the Arson Hotline at 1-800-723-2020.

 The Minnesota Arson Reward Project of the IAAI may offer a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification of persons responsible for this fire.
