Glen Clifford Lindstrom, 88, died Oct. 13, 2008 at Forest Lake, Minn.
The son of Andrew and Gertie Lindstrom, Glen was born June 3, 1920 in Dalesburg, S.D. He grew up on a farm with his five brothers and a sister, and because he was the smallest person on a working farm, it fell to him to help with the household chores. Thus it was that he learned to cook, sew and work as a team player.
In 1942, Glen became a member of the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Alabama where he headed up the tailor shop, repairing clothing and sewing on military patches. Many years later when the Alabama was put into dry dock, the Department of the Navy commissioned Glen to reconstruct the tailor shop. Glen received his honorable discharge from the military in 1945 and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Award, WWII Victory Medal, Liberty Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and nine Battle Stars.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Glen enrolled at Gustavus Adolphus College at St. Peter. There he met his future bride, Audrey E. Lindstrom.
He graduated with a Master Degree in physiology and went on to teach at Grove City from 1950 to 1960. While there he developed the driver education program and was involved in teaching industrial education.
In 1960, Glen moved his family to Pine City where he taught English and driver education at Pine City High School.
Following his retirement from teaching, Glen continued to lead a very active life. He pursued his lifelong passion for woodworking and published two books about his life and years of service in the military.
In 2002, Glen and Audrey moved to their farmstead. Audrey passed away on Feb. 4, 2005, thereby ending their marriage of 57 years.
Glen is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Keith and Sis Lindstrom of Blaine and Dale and Jan Lindstrom of Cave Creek, Ariz.; grandchildren: Shawn and Tiffany Lindstrom, Trevor Lindstrom, Heidi and Robert Langley, Kyle and Amber Lindstrom, Chad Lindstrom, Jodi and Joshua Hagen and Jillian Lindstrom; and great-great grandchildren: Ashton, Alayna, and Carson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Gertie Lindstrom, his wife Audrey, sister Irene, and brothers Orville, Ralph, Elmer and Lester.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City with the Reverend Vicki VanderVegt officiating. Music was provided by Lois Bengston, Debbie Carlberg and Helen Clark. Honorary casket bearers were Clarence Espeseth and Kermit Stenerson. Casket bearers were Shawn Lindstrom, Kyle Lindstrom, Chad Lindstrom, Fred Lindstrom and David Wold. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service, Swanson Chapel, Pine City.
