The University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs, in cooperation with the Pine County Planning Department, is creating an Outdoor Recreation Plan for Pine County, scheduled to be complete in December of 2019. The team has released a survey to help inform the County Board of Commissioners for potential future recreational opportunity development in the community.

The 2017 Pine County Comprehensive Plan identified that outdoor recreation, tourism and economic development are high priorities for residents in the community. Well established outdoor recreational opportunities and parks have been demonstrated to greatly enhance quality of life, community health outcomes, desirability of a community for tourism and overall economic vitality.

Pine County is in a fortunate position to have access to approximately 41,000 acres of tax-forfeited lands. Through the years the County has not made a focused effort on facilitating public use of these lands for recreation. Resident input in this survey will help identify where to put lands to use for better service to the public.

The survey can be accessed online at:, or paper versions may be accessible at area businesses and at the Pine County Planning office (635 Northridge Dr. NW, Ste 250, Pine City). The survey will close on Oct. 31, 2019.
