John Frank Zalaznik died Oct. 28, 2014 in Austin, Texas at the age of 101. He was born Aug. 18, 1913 to parents Matt and Katherine Zalaznik who immigrated from Slovenia.
John was raised on a farm east of Pine City and attended school district #30. He often said he learned to speak English at the country school where he had a very good teacher.
He joined the National Guard at age 17, then into the army during World War II serving in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.
John is survived by his daughter Debbie Holley, her husband Bryan; son John and wife Juretta; four grandchildren: Evan, Erica, Kyle and Keith; his sisters: Mary Andersen and Erna Pangerl; brother Lawrence Zalaznik and wife Marilyn; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mimi, his parents, brothers Leo, Ray and Will, and sister Margaret.
A celebration of John’s life was held Nov. 1, 2014 at The Summit at Westlake Hills, Austin, Texas.
