Mae L. Manthey

Mae Manthey of Payson, Arizona, formerly of Pine City, passed away at Rim Country Health in Payson at the age of 93.

Mae LeRue was born Dec. 4, 1925, to Charles and Myrtle (Thorn) Bettinger in Lake Park, Iowa. Mae attended the Meadow Bank country school. In 1938 the family moved from Iowa to Minnesota.

Mae met Howard Lindstrom and they were married in 1943. They lived in Pine City and together had five children:  Patty, Kathy, Danny, Denise and Duane. In 1951, the family moved to Spring Lake Park and Mae worked at several different businesses after raising her family.

In 1971, Mae married Rufus Manthey and in 1977 they moved to Arizona. She enjoyed the Arizona weather, tending her flowers and entertaining friends at coffee parties. She also could be found busy knitting and crocheting. Mae and Rufus enjoyed traveling and many fishing trips. Mae continued to live in Arizona after Rufus’ death in 2008. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends.

Mae is survived by her children Patty Beck of Payson, Arizona, Kathryn (Richard) Johnson of Crosby, Denise (Alan) Tervo of Coon Rapids, Duane (Lori) Lindstrom of Peoria, Arizona; sister June Jacobson of Pine City; daughter-in-law Carolyn Lindstrom of Andover; sister-in-law Pauline Bettinger; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mae is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Myrtle Bettinger, husband Rufus Manthey, son Danny Lindstrom, son-in-law Earl Beck, brothers Robert Bettinger, Charles (Edna) Bettinger and brother-in-law Herbert Jacobson.

Pastor Rob Saphr officiated funeral services for Mae at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in Pine City. Interment took place in Birchwood Cemetery.
