John A. Mattison

John Alan Mattison of Big Stone City, S.D. died Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Ortonville Hospital. He was 61 years old.

He was born March 9, 1947, in Hibbing. He was the son of Albert John and Elsie S. (Sarkki) Mattison. He attended school in Hibbing.

He worked as a machinist and tool maker for most of his career. He most recently was owner and manager of the Big Stone Motel, before becoming semi-retired.

He was united in marriage on May 25, 2002, to Rebecca M. Mattison at Henriette. He was an avid motorist, enjoying vehicles and motorcycles of all kinds. He was a member of the Big Stone Cruisers Car Club and always had fun buying and selling vehicles.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family, friends, and his special dog, Bootz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elsie; and his second wife, Janice (Kookie) Mattison.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca of Big Stone City, SD; three children: Ricke (Ruth) Mattison of Mora, Sara (Kurt) Flegel of Benson, and Michael (Jessica) Mattison of New Richmond; three stepsons: Troy (Joline) Wimmer of Ortonville, Travis (Jessica) Lewellin of Grasston, Lee Anderson of Pine City, brother, Michael (LuAnn) Mattison of Webster, Wis.; 16 grandchildren.

A memorial service was Saturday, May 10 at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City. Rev. Beth Conrad officiated.

Music provided by Pat Kunz, organist and Tim Mundwiler, vocalist. “Bootz” was the honorary bearer. The readers were Albert Mattison and Shelby Flegel.

Mundwiler Funeral Home of Milbank is in charge of arrangements.
