County hosts collaborative fishing event

Students and staff from various school districts and departments across Pine County and the state DNR spend a perfect afternoon fishing on Sturgeon Lake Monday. Afterward, the group enjoyed hot dogs and snacks.

Pine County Probation Supervisor Kevin Glass said he, “took the fishing pole and cast it,” by organizing an afternoon of fishing on Sturgeon Lake for 17 youth on Monday. Participating students and their friends attend school in the East Central, Hinckley-Finlayson and Pine City school districts.

Willow River High School Principal Gregg Campbell took youth out on his pontoon; East Central High School Principal Stef Youngberg grilled almost 60 hotdogs; East Central Superintendent Andrew Almos took kids out in his boat; Minnesota Department of Natural Resources  Conservation Officer Bret Grundmeier helped recruit other DNR officers who had boats, life jackets and poles; and Sherry Johnson of Pine County Probation caught the majority of the worms used for bait.

Also helping were Pine County Sheriff Jeff Nelson, several Pine County deputies, Pine County Health and Human Services staff Kristin Schroeder and Adriane Wimmer, Probation Director Terry Fawcett, and Cultural Community Coach Bill Schaaf.

Glass said the goal of getting youth outdoors doing something prosocial and fun was accomplished. He said everyone he spoke with said they had fun and would like to do it again.
