Pine City traveled to Two Harbors on Friday, Sept. 6 and fell short of victory 17-20, putting the Dragons 0-2 for the start of the season.
George Ausmus put the Dragons on the board first in the first quarter with a 32 yard field goal. Two Harbors answered in the second quarter with a nine yard run for a touchdown (missed extra point) to make the score 3-6. Tryston West powered back with a 28 yard touchdown run (missed extra point) to make the score 9-6; however, Two Harbors would find the end zone one more time prior to the end of the first half to make the score 9-13.
Scoreless in the third period, the Dragons showed their strength with a 67 yard touchdown run from Caleb Fromm. George Ausmus added two more points on the board for Pine City, running for the two-point conversion. Victory slipped through Pine City’s grasp with a late Two Harbors 29 yard touchdown pass and an extra point kick, putting Two Harbors up 17-20, and sealed the victory.
“It was a fantastic game; unfortunately we came out on the wrong end of it. The guys played extremely hard and kept battling all night,” said coach Jared Polzine.
Pine City outplayed Two Harbors in rushing yards with 242 to their 201; however, Two Harbors dominated the air with 87 passing yards to the Dragons’ zero. Two Harbors also had a 50% third down efficiency to Pine City’s 27%.
Tryston West led Pine City in rushing yards with 88. Caleb Fromm was close behind with 83 yards. Jacob Lindahl and Alex Laven led the Dragons in tackles, while Duke Waxberg showed his strength and speed, covering the field with 17 assists.
Pine City will host Greenway on Friday, Sept. 13. Game time is 7 p.m.
