The Dragons’ golf season came to an end on May 31 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The team did their best in the Section 7AA Tournament, seeing several players advance to the second day. Unfortunately, none of Pine City’s golfers would have quite enough in the tank to make it to the State Tournament.
“Our season finished up at a very nice course this year,” said head coach Adam Jensen. “We had nice weather. Our golfers played well, but none were able to advance past the second day to State.”
The girls’ first round was on Tuesday, May 29. Lindsay Miller was Pine City’s low golfer with a 103, but Emily Guzik was right behind her with a 104. Katie Miller shot a 124, and all three made the cut to golf a second day. Kristina Knutson shot a 135 and Ally Tracy withdrew herself from the competition for personal reasons.
Wednesday’s weather wasn’t as nice as the boys’ first round of sections began. The Dragons saw some good scores come in from many teams and the level of competition was quite high. Alex Wimmer continued to impress, shooting an 89 and becoming the only Dragon who would advance to play the following day. Justin Gamec shot a 91, Josh Doenz shot a 102, and Griffin Faur shot a 126.
The section finals, on Thursday, May 31, saw a very nice day of weather, but unfortunately, none of the Dragons would advance. The season came to an end, and so did the high school golf careers of three seniors. Ryan Gamec-Bromberg, Knutson and Tracy all graduated this spring and will be missed as the program continues on.
“For how short our season ended up being,” said Jensen, “we sure had a lot of fun. I am looking forward to 2019; only 287 days until our next season begins.”
