Dragon Girls Tennis has eight returning players with varsity experience. They will be a young team with only one senior, Emily Guzik. The team will be looking to Guzik, along with co-captains Lydia Adams and Katie Miller, for leadership.
“I am most excited to work with the girls and see them improve throughout the season. It is so fun to be with them on the court. They have great energy and are an amazing group of young women,” said coach Kristin Unverzagt. “They set high goals and bring a hardworking energy to practice and matches.”
Pine City’s goal is to continue to improve each time they are on the court, having the player push themselves and each other, having set their sights on the conference and section titles.
This team’s chemistry and work ethic will be key to their success this season.
The Dragons started their season 3-0 with victories over Park Rapids (6-1), Roseau (6-1) and Moorhead (5-2). On Monday, Aug. 19, the Dragons battled hard in their annual Power Tournament, placing sixth overall. This year Pine City hosted Bemidji, Blue Earth, Litchfield, Mounds Park Academy, Osakis, St. Peter and Willmar.
“The day provided great opportunities for the team to set goals for the season and also have the opportunity to play three tough matches. Many tie breakers were played and the team improved with each match as the day went on,” said coach Unverzagt. “The girls should be proud of their efforts and the direction they are moving.”
Earning individual medals for the Dragons were Ella Sell finishing third at second singles, Addison Sell finishing third at third singles. First doubles duo of Maddie Berglund and Katie Miller also finished third, and fourth doubles duo of Emily Guzik and Lena Roubinek earned consolation champions.
