The week of rain postponed both Pine City girls tennis matches scheduled for last week, but did not stop the Dragons from coming out ready to play on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Hibbing Invitational.

With only one practice outside the past week, Pine City was excited and ready to hit the courts.

The Dragons took fourth place overall falling behind Duluth East, Virginia and Stillwater. Pine City came ready to play and continues to improve each time they hit the court.

“It is exciting to see them execute what they have been working on in practice,” said coach Kristin Unverzagt. “The girls continue to encourage each other with a common goal to continue to improve each day, practice and match.”

Lydia Adams finished in third place (1st singles), Ella Sell (2nd singles) was rained out but was up in her third place match 6-1, 4-1. Addison Sell took home consolation champ at third singles. Emily Guzik played the first two rounds at 4th singles battling hard, but fell short with two losses, and Claire Emmons finished the final round at 4th singles with a win over Hibbing.

In doubles, the duo of Maddie Berglund/Katie Miller took third place, 2nd doubles duo of Sophie Lahti/Allison Unverzagt played three tight matches, and ended the day with a win in the third round, and the rotation of Claire Emmons/Malia Mikyska/Rhaya Merrick took third place overall at third doubles.

Pine City’s match against Aitkin has moved to Thursday, Sept. 19 (away) and their match against Little Falls has been moved to Monday, Sept. 23 at home.
