Pine City volleyball didn’t have any games during the week; however, they left it all out on the courts going 4-1 while hosting the Pine City Invite on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The Dragons started the morning defeating Moose Lake-Willow River 2-0 (25-23 and 25-20). With no down time between matches, Pine City scored another victory, against Barnum, beating them in two close games (26-24 and 25-21). The Dragons continued to hit well in this game with six of the nine players earning kills. Leading the team was Ashley Faur with 10 kills.

“Barnum is a strong serve/receive team – we only had six ace serves in this match,” said coach Tami Nelson.

Pine City was very strong defensively against Barnum. Kelsey Erickson led the team with nine digs followed by Makenna Nelson with eight digs.

After a one match break, the Dragons squared off against Crosby-Ironton. This was definitely their toughest match of the day. Pine City started off slow, losing the first game 17-25. They showed their strength, coming back strong to win the second game 25-20. The third game was extremely close; however, Pine City ended up losing the battle 14-16. Ashley Faur led the team offensively with 12 kills. The Dragons’ serving was not as aggressive in this game; Kelsey Erickson, Ashley Faur, Ellie Hasz and Makenna Nelson each had only one ace serve.

Immediately following that match Pine City played East Central, defeating them 2-0 (25-13 and 25-15).

“We were definitely tired after the last match, but we didn’t let up,” said coach Nelson.

Leading the team offensively were: Ellie Hasz with six kills, Kloey Lind and Ashley Faur with five kills each and Lexi Havel, Kelsey Erickson and Makenna Nelson with one kill each. Ellie Hasz led the team in ace serves in this match with five ace serves, Kelsey Erickson had two,  Makenna Nelson and Katelyn Lorsung (#6) had one each.

The Dragons’ last match of the day was against Hinckley-Finlayson. Pine City won this match 2-0 (25-12 and 25-10). They were all very tired after eight hours in the gym, but that didn’t stop this group.

Leading the team offensively were Lexi Havel and Kloey Lind  with three kills each. Leading the team in ace serves was Makenna Nelson with four.

“It was a long, tiring day of volleyball but the girls never stopped working hard,” said coach Nelson.
